PROVIDENCE — After 23 years it wasn’t going to come easy, not even with a three-goal lead midway through the evening. Not against a service academy rival that signs on to go the distance, whatever the odds.

But Harvard’s hockey team didn’t win all of those trophies this winter without wanting to see this historic season through. And while it came down to goalie Merrick Madsen needing to deny Matt Serratore on the doorstep with a dozen seconds to go, the Crimson hung on to claim the NCAA East Regional crown, besting Air Force, 3-2, before 3,708 at Dunkin’ Donuts Center to advance to the Frozen Four for the first time since 1994. Harvard, which is riding a school-record 18-game unbeaten streak, will meet Minnesota-Duluth in the semifinals in Chicago.
