Mass. voters weigh in on political leadership during COVID-19 pandemic in new poll

Voters in Massachusetts weighed in on leadership during the COVID-19 pandemic in a new poll from UMass Amherst and WCVB released Monday.

Of the 713 registered voters who were surveyed, 79 percent of respondents said Gov. Charlie Baker has handled the pandemic well, while 70 percent said President Donald Trump has not handled it well.

Asked to use a word or two to describe the most important issue facing Massachusetts, the registered Democrats, Republicans and Independents used words related to the COVID-19 pandemic most frequently, along with the economy, unemployment, and housing.

According to the survey, 32 percent of the respondents said they or one of their close friends or family members has tested positive for COVID-19, while 62 percent said they were worried about contracting the virus. Forty-eight percent of the participants said they were worried about schools remaining remote or moving to virtual learning due to COVID-19; 79 percent said they were worried about another wave of the virus arriving later this year.
While 49 percent of the polled voters said Massachusetts is generally going in the right direction, 71 percent said the country as a whole is on the wrong track.
