Danvers police arrest teen in alleged assault on a disabled person

The arrest comes after residents demanded action at a recent Select Board meeting.

The Danvers Police Department has arrested a 15-year-old boy in connection to an incident that took place last Saturday, where a group of teens allegedly attacked a disabled man at Plains Park.

On Friday, Danvers police sought an arrest warrant for the juvenile in connection with the Oct. 12 attack, according to a statement. Officers arrested the teen at 1:30 p.m.

The teen is being charged with two counts of assault and battery by means of a dangerous weapon, assault and battery to intimidate based on disability, and assault and battery on a person with an intellectual disability.

The Danvers Police Department, in coordination with the Essex County District Attorney’s Office, is continuing to investigate the incident.

Because juveniles are involved, police say no additional details can be released now.

The arrest follows a heated Select Board meeting on Tuesday, where the victim, Chris Anderson, known as “Ducky,” pleaded with the board.

“I was scared to death of those kids,” he told the board. “It breaks my heart every day, and I can’t sleep at nighttime. It’s hard. Can you guys do more for me, please?”

Others at the meeting demanded action from the police to do something about the “hoodlums” who have been causing havoc to residents and businesses in downtown Danvers for years.

Residents spoke of the unruly teens weaving in and out of traffic, catcalling, trespassing, and sticking their middle fingers up at them.

What happened to Anderson was the last straw.

“These kids cannot be doing what they’re doing to people,” Maureen Bernard, a Select Board member, said at the meeting on Tuesday. “We need to take control.”
