A Revere police officer has resigned following his arrest in a suspected drunk driving crash Sunday, less than two months after his graduation from the police academy.
Matteo Velasquez, 24, pleaded not guilty Tuesday to charges of operating a vehicle under the influence of liquor and driving recklessly to endanger. Judge Jane Prince released Velasquez on personal recognizance, and his defense attorney declined to comment following Tuesday’s arraignment.
Revere police said officers were dispatched to a crash on Cushman Avenue around 6:12 a.m. Sunday morning and arrived to find a car had struck a brick retaining wall and sustained heavy damage. Velasquez — the vehicle’s sole occupant — was uninjured and police arrested him on suspicion of drunk driving.
According to Revere police, Velasquez graduated from the Lowell Police Academy on Oct. 10. The department placed Velasquez on administrative leave without pay following his arrest and announced Tuesday he has submitted his resignation.
Velasquez is due back in court Feb. 3 for a hearing.
