Man charged with motor vehicle homicide, OUI in double fatal Winthrop crash

John F. Fannin, 30, is expected to be arraigned Monday.

A 30-year-old man who was behind the wheel of a coupe convertible in a crash that killed his two passengers Sunday afternoon was allegedly under the influence of alcohol, authorities said Monday.

John F. Fannin, of Winthrop, was charged with operating under the influence of liquor, second offense, and two counts of motor vehicle homicide, Massachusetts State Police said in a statement.

Police allege Fannin was driving a 2007 Mitsubishi Eclipse northbound on Winthrop Shore Drive near Neptune Avenue around 3 p.m. when he drove across a solid white fog line and struck the rear of an unoccupied, parked 2013 Dodge Ram 1500 pick-up truck.

“The Mitsubishi subsequently overturned onto its roof and rotated approximately 180 degrees,” state police said.

Two female passengers in Fannin’s vehicle died as a result of the crash, according to authorities.

Officials identified them Monday as Kathryn J. Adelstein, 28, of Winthrop, and Madeline L. Lund, 29, of Beverly.

Fannin was brought to Massachusetts General Hospital Sunday with non-life threatening injuries, according to State Police.

Adelstein was also brought to the hospital where she was later pronounced dead, officials said. Lund was determined to be deceased on scene.

Fannin is expected to be arraigned in East Boston District Court Monday morning. The investigation remains ongoing.
